Why Don’t Photographers Give Out RAW Files?
An Honest, Slightly Nerdy Explanation from Your Dream Entertainment Photography Team
We love curious clients. Truly. And one of the most common questions we hear — usually after an amazing shoot and a gallery preview — is:
“So... can I get the RAW files too?”
It’s a fair ask. And the short answer?
No — but not because we’re being shady.
The long answer? Well, it involves a little storytelling, a bit of behind-the-scenes magic, and a dash of nerdy photography stuff. So let’s talk about it.
Great question.
A RAW file is basically the digital version of a film negative. It’s what our cameras capture before anything is polished, enhanced, or made even remotely Instagram-worthy.
To put it another way: asking for the RAW files is like asking a chef to send you the raw ingredients instead of the actual meal. Sure, you could figure out how to cook it yourself — but it won’t taste the same, and it definitely won’t look pretty on the plate.
RAW files:
Are huge — like “clear-some-space-on-your-computer” huge
Look flat and dull until they’re professionally edited
Require specialized software and a decent amount of editing know-how
So while we totally get why you’d be curious about them, they’re really not the kind of thing you’d enjoy scrolling through with a glass of wine. Unless you're into super muted, underexposed, unedited moments with zero personality. (Didn’t think so.)
Here’s where it gets real. It’s not about keeping things from you — it’s about giving you something better.
1. They’re Not the Final Product
At Dream Entertainment, we don’t just snap photos and call it a day. The editing process is where the magic happens. That’s when your photos go from “nice” to “frame-worthy.”
RAWs are just the first step — the sketch before the painting, the cake batter before the bake. Sure, there’s potential there, but you hired us for the final result, not the ingredients list.
2. We’re Protecting Our Reputation (and Your Memories)
Let’s say you get the RAWs, throw on a heavy Instagram filter, and upload it with our name tagged. Suddenly, your bright, joyful wedding looks like it took place during a zombie apocalypse. Not ideal.
We’ve worked hard to build a consistent style that reflects the vibe, energy, and emotion of your day. When photos are edited (or over-edited) by someone else, it doesn’t just look off — it reflects on us. Even if we didn’t touch it.
3. RAW Files Are… Kind of a Pain
We’re not saying you can’t handle them — we just don’t want you to have to.
You’ll need pro software like Lightroom or Capture One, a strong computer, and some serious time to figure out what’s what. Plus, RAW files are HUGE. Transferring or storing hundreds of them is like asking your laptop to do squats with a piano on its back.
Save yourself the trouble. Let us do what we do best.
4. There’s a Licensing Thing Too
Here’s the less-fun-but-still-important part: RAW files are considered intellectual property.
When we give you final images, we’re granting you a personal-use license. But giving you RAWs is like handing over the keys to the creative kingdom. You could — knowingly or not — re-edit, sell, or repurpose them. And that’s not something we can offer lightly.
It’s not just about trust — it’s about copyright, quality control, and protecting both sides from misunderstandings down the line.
We hear you. If you have a legitimate reason — say you’re a designer, a creative director, or just REALLY love having every possible backup — we’re open to the conversation.
Just know:
There will be an added fee
You’ll be getting access to a bunch of files that aren’t “ready”
We’ll need to put a licensing agreement in place, because… legal things
We’re not saying no — we’re just saying, “Let’s talk about it like adults over email.”
Let’s focus on the good stuff. When you book photography with Dream Entertainment, here’s what we do give you:
A curated gallery of fully edited, high-resolution images
Photos that are ready to print, share, post, and treasure
A polished, stress-free final product that represents the absolute best of your event
You won’t need to touch a single slider or open any weird software. You’ll just get to enjoy your memories — the way they were meant to be seen.
Ask away. We love working with clients who care about the details — that tells us you value your photos as much as we do.
Whether you’re planning a wedding, throwing a huge celebration, or building your brand with a photoshoot, we’ve got your back (and your best angles). Let’s create something beautiful — and let us handle the RAW stuff behind the scenes.
